A Pandemic Changes Everything: Helpful Resources

Kudos to our local press, the Indy, WCHL, Durham Morning Herald, and The Local Reporter, who have worked hard to report on the coronavirus outbreak and to share resources for how to deal with the new way of doing things.

We’ve selected some of our favorite resources and news stories you may have missed.

More Information

Life during this COVID-19 global pandemic has become stressful.  Everyone we hear from is having a mix of emotions and feel stressed from all the disruption we’ve experienced in our ordinary lives.

Particularly for extroverts,  practicing the necessary social distancing can bring boredom and stress. We need to find ways to feel connected to others – both kids and adults.

The internet is chock full of information we need right now and full disclosure this list is straight from Mozilla.

I hope you are following the guidance of the healthcare experts — stay inside away from crowds, wash your hands, reach out to family, friends and neighbors to see what they might need right now. We’re all in this together, online and off.

Ways to Help

  • The Town of Chapel Hill is now accepting donations to assist low-income residents with emergency housing assistance.  Make a donation here.
  • Reach out to elderly neighbors.  Sample message: “If you are in a high-risk group (60+ or have underlying health issues) and are trying to stay home & away from stores (which is strongly advised), please let us know if there is anything we can get for you. We are more than happy to add your items to our list when we go out, help with online ordering, or assist in any way we can. We will leave items on your porch and stay 6 feet away! Just give us a call and let us know how we can help.”
  • Help feed kids and families.
  • Help for restaurant workers:

  • Raleigh, NC chef Ashley Christensen and the Frankie Lemmon Foundation have launched the Triangle Restaurant Workers Relief Fund Wednesday. The fund is open to wait staff, bartenders, hosts, mangers, delivery drivers, cooks, catering staff and dishwashers who have experienced wage disruption or lay offs due to the coronavirus. Workers can apply for aid on the fund’s website. http://frankielemmonschool.org/restaurantworkersrelieffund/
  • Grants will be awarded by an independent committee of non-restaurant owners. Any worker living in the Triangle and has experienced wage loss due to the closures can apply.
(NOTE: Between noon Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday, Parker said, 4,721 people filed for unemployment in NC due to COVID-19. source N&O: https://www.newsobserver.com/…/coron…/article241305251.html…)

Ways to Pray

For those who worship in a Christian faith tradition and are missing being able to go to church in person, there are churches live streaming services on Sundays & some midweek.

  • The Chapel of the Cross live-streamed Sunday morning at 9 a.m. via http://www.thechapelofthecross.org and also via their Facebook page The Chapel of the Cross. ( it was live on Sunday and it was recorded so can see again)
  • Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chapel Hill also live-streamed on Sunday at 10:30 via their website https://www.holytrinitychapelhill.org/ and it is on YouTube so you see it again. They will also have a service tonight at 7 PM–it’s their regular Wednesday evening Lenten service at 7 pm. live streamed at https://mailchi.mp/0d570b80ff33/lenten-worship-live-stream
  • The Sunday & Wednesday services have been/will be recorded so can listen/watch them later. The Wednesday service is very peaceful service of music, prayers, and a brief meditation/homily

Animal Care

Cornwallis Road Animal Hospital and Creature Comforts Inn in Durham (https://cornwallispetcare.com/) is doing curbside care–they will come to your car and take your dog (on leash) and cat (in carrier) into the clinic and for his/her exam and/or treatment and/or vaccinations or whatever is needed or for grooming or boarding, etc, and when done will bring back to you and you pay for service by phone. Dr. Amy Edwards and Dr. Herman Jeffer are the veterinarians there.
