Tuesday, November 5, 2019 was Election Day. Chapel Hill residents reelected Mayor Pam Hemminger with over 80% of the votes against challenger Josh Levenson. Three Council members won seats decisively.
We are proud that CHALT-endorsed candidates Jess Anderson and Amy Ryan. came in first and second place for Town Council. Congratulations to both Jess and Amy, and to third-place winner Michael Parker. At first we were elated that Council member Nancy Oates appeared to have won reelection by one vote, but when the Durham County votes came in, student candidate Tai Huynh had moved ahead by 24 votes. (Note: part of Chapel Hill is located in Durham County.) That race was judged too close to call on election night until all absentee and provisional ballots were counted.
Renuka Soll ran an vigorous campaign. Her talents and sunny personality are now widely known and we are sorry her constructive talents won’t benefit the Council this time. We know she will continue her good works in the community. The last four finishers, Tai Huynh, Nancy Oates, Sue Hunter, and Renuka Soll, all came within 85 votes of each other in this highly competition race. See Herald-Sun story here.
