“Retirement residences” Removes Seven Acres of Trees

| The “Chapel Hill Retirement Residences” will be built on Estes Drive adjacent to the Somerset and Huntington Drive neighborhood and next to Phillips Middle School. The apartments are intended for senior residents, although the company is selling out before construction has begun. See project details here.
The Town’s 2020 planning effort was intended to plan new growth with citizen input for this area they named Central West. See map of Central West planning area. Residents and town staff spent scores of meetings talking about saving character, tree preservation and making new development fit with the surrounding neighborhoods. We never dreamed that the inevitable development on Estes Drive would remove nearly every tree on this seven acre site. None of the tree canopy remains to provide shade to walkers or bikers along the multi-use bike trail we planned. The buffers on three sides of this site have disappeared and only a few spindly pines remind us of the forest that was once there. |
